Throughout its editions, FAN has become known as an open space of expression, appreciation and propagation of black art and culture in the city of Belo Horizonte. Held biennially, the festival was created in 1997 and stands out for connecting the ancestral roots of black culture to its contemporary expressions.
Its curatorial identity primes for a dialogical perspective concerning the encouragement and propagation of black art and black culture, going in the opposite direction of stereotypes and reductive views on these culture forms. Another goal of the Festival is to strengthen both traditional African matrices still preserved, and those resulting from contact with other cultures.
