In the context of the Japanese Immigration Centennial in Brazil of 2008, the Japanese Theater Group 1980 (Guekidan Hatimaru) circulated around 10 Brazilian cities with the show “Ee-Janaika” (Nevermind), which covers the end of the samurai era and the beginning of modern Japan in the second half of the nineteenth century. One of the highlights of the work was the soundtrack, performed live by percussion musicians of the Baramgot group (Wind Peninsula).
Followers of the film school chaired by the film director Shohei Imamura were the founders of the Theater Group 1980. Its name refers to the year of its foundation. Currently, director and playwright Den Fujita leads the company.
The tour, as well as other activities of the Japanese Immigration Centennial, aimed to contribute for deepening the cultural ties between Brazil and Japan, as well as to harmonize the integration between these two people, with eyes turned to the next hundred years.
